Three iPhones, one OBS: a surprisingly cheap multi-camera setup
Turn two or three old iPhones into separate OBS camera angles over USB, with reliable scene switching, and settings for long sessions.
A real multi-camera setup used to mean real money: several cameras, a capture card for each one, and cables that cost more than cables should. Meanwhile, there may be two or three retired iPhones somewhere in a drawer in your house, each with a better camera than the webcam on your monitor.
I use three old iPhones when I record guitar jams: one for the room, one for the fretboard, and one for the loop station. They connect to OBS over USB, and I cut between them with the number keys.

The shopping list
- Two or three iPhones. Old phones are fine. For USB, I recommend hardware from 2016 or newer; the device compatibility guide explains the practical cutoff.
- A USB data cable per phone. A charge-only cable will not work. If a phone never shows up in OBS, swap the cable before you touch any settings.
- A powered USB hub if your computer is short on ports. Make sure it supports data, not just charging. If a phone is missing, plug it straight into the computer before blaming the app or the hub.
- Mounts. Cheap tripods or gooseneck clamps that grip a desk or microphone stand are super helpful. A phone leaning against a book eventually falls over.
- The software. OBS Studio, plus my Camera for OBS Studio app on each phone and the plugin on your computer.
If you already own the phones, the total new cost is the mounts, and possibly a hub and some longer usb cables.
Wire it up
Each phone runs the app, connects over USB, and appears in OBS as its own iOS Camera source. Add the phones one at a time: connect the first phone, add its source, give it a useful name, and then repeat. Use names like “Wide,” “Close,” and “Top,” not “iOS Camera 3.” to avoid confusion later when you're setting up your scenes.
The single-phone USB setup guide covers the installation. Multi-camera is the same process repeated. The practical ceiling depends on the computer, connection type, resolution, and frame rate.
Why USB instead of wireless? With one camera, Wi-Fi can be useful. With three, you are asking the same network to carry three live feeds and keep them aligned. USB removes network latency and congestion from the camera path, and it charges the phones while they work. Cables keep the setup boring and the batteries full. Save the wifi camera for the angle that genuinely cannot reach the computer.
Scenes: one per angle, plus the grid
Add as many iOS Camera sources as you need. Set them all up in your scenes and it'll just work.
Make a scene for each camera at full frame. Then make one scene with all three arranged in a grid or picture-in-picture. That is the “everything” shot — useful when you want to check framing without hopping between scenes.
Assign a hotkey to each scene under Settings → Hotkeys. Number keys work. A cheap USB numpad works better. A Stream Deck is the luxury version of the same idea. Now you have a small vision mixer. Cutting between angles live is genuinely fun.
OBS Multiview lets you watch every scene at once so you can check the shot before taking it. Open it from the View menu.
Keeping three cameras in sync
The simplest rule is to use the same connection type and frame rate for every angle. Three USB phones are easier to align than a mix of USB and Wi-Fi, but they are not genlocked cameras. Test them before a long recording.
Use the clap test: record every angle, clap once on camera, and inspect the grid scene frame by frame. If one angle arrives earlier, add a Render Delay filter to that faster source until the pictures line up.
Check again after changing a cable, hub, connection type, resolution, or frame rate. A delay value that worked for one setup is not a universal number.
Performance
The computer has to decode and composite several video streams. Start each phone at 1080p30 rather than 4K or 60fps. Open View → Stats in OBS and watch rendering and encoding lag while switching scenes and recording.
If lag rises, lower the camera resolution or frame rate and test again. The machine decides what it can sustain; adding more cameras always adds more work.
Phones on long sessions have two other enemies: heat and interruptions. Take off thick cases, keep the phones away from hot lights, and lower the resolution/frame rate if one starts throttling. Turn on a Focus mode or Do Not Disturb, disable Auto-Lock, and leave Camera for OBS Studio open in the foreground. An incoming call in the middle of a recording is a lesson I've learned too many times.
What do people build with this?
The two setups I hear about most are church live streams and music/dj performances. The skeleton is the same: a wide shot, one or two close angles, and a grid or picture-in-picture scene. The same arrangement works for lessons, demonstrations, podcasts, and any recording where one fixed view is not enough.

Name the sources, put every phone on USB, clap once, and check the grid before you trust a long take. The phones are the inexpensive part; the craft is making the connections predictable and choosing the right shot.
